Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speaking event organizer. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which provides commentary and videos on depictions of women's roles in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which analyzes how females are represented in the popular media narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in pop culture she also works on issues related to harassment targeted at women, as well as the marginalized groups of individuals in the internet space. Sarkeesian graduated with a master's degree in the field of political and social thought from York University. As a public speaker, she's extremely sought-after and has given talks at TEDxWomen XOXO, TEDxWomen and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Inquiring about gender identities and feminisms from the age of 7, she started her site Feminist Frequency in 2009 while still a student at the University. The ambitious lady planned to start a web-based series on gender representation within video games, and was herself the target of a cyber-bullying campaign. The attack did not deter her instead it strengthened her determination as a feminist media critic. Her significant contributions in the field of feminists were recognized by a variety of prizes.
